Konan Honors Michael Eldred with Life Membership

Today, the Executive Committee of the Konan Judo Association awarded Michael Eldred of Fruitland ID an Honorary Konan Life Membership.

This award is in recognition of  Michael’s dedication, perseverance. tenacity and accomplishment in elite international competitive judo and his embodiment of the ideals of judo.

Michael resides in a remote area of the country. He has had to travel far afield at great personal expense over many years for top international competition and training.  He has made many personal sacrifices striving to excel at judo.

Despite this busy schedule, Michael has been a great friend to Konan, leading several clinics for our young players.  During his visits, he has shown himself to be an exceptional role model for our Konan kids, and for all judoka. embodying the ideals of judo:  Michael is modest , unassuming, hard-working and fully committed to the sport of judo.

At the same time, Michael understands the importance of education, and reminded our young judoka that they must be good students and good citizens as well as good judo players.

Thank you, Michael for your commitment to judo and for your friendship and help to the young judoka of Konan. We are proud to welcome you as an honorary member of our yudanshakai.

The award will be presented to Michael at the 2012 Junior Nationals in Spokane in July.

2012 Busan International Sports Festival (Judo)

A message from Mr. Joon K. Chi, Chairman of the USJF Referee Development Committee:

Hello everyone.

This will be the 5th time USJF high school development program will attend the Festival in Busan, Korea. It will be July 21–July 28. This is a training camp and Shiai for High School students. If you are interested in attending, here are the requirements:

• USJF member
• 10-12th grade in high school
• 70 kg or more (because open weight categories)
• Approval of parents and coach
• Provide your own round trip ticket (room and board are provided by the Organizing Committee)
• Individuals must have health insurance

In the past this has been a wonderful cultural and learning experience and I look forward to another great week in Busan with young US students.

Women’s Self-Defense Clinic, Rochester Hills MI

WHEN:  Saturday, June 16^th and June 30th from 10:30 AM to 12:15 PM (Class size limited to 25)

LOCATION: 1771 Star-Batt Dr., Rochester Hills, MI  just east of Crooks/North of M59 (look for Speedway Gas Station)

SYLLABUS:

• Self-defense and falling disciplines/awareness
• Introduction to basic self-defense techniques and legal perspective (what does “stand your ground mean”?)
• Participation with others in a safe and supportive environment
• Another more comprehensive course series (4 classes) will be offered at later date

INSTRUCTORS:

• Steven DeRaedt, USJF Certified Self Defense Instructor and 5^th Degree Black Belt in Judo
• Tomas Gomez, USJF Certified Self Defense Instructor, and 1^st Degree Black Belt in Judo
• Steve Curtis, Oakland County Sheriff, and 1^st Degree Black Belt in Judo

Reminder for Non-profits – IRS Form 990 due May 15

Many Konan and JAM clubs are non-profits.  This is a reminder that the deadline small tax-exempt organizations to file their annual IRS Form 990-N  IRS Form 990-N is May 15. If your organization is a non-profit, check with your tax advisor to determine if you are required to file.
